The sudden death of Captain Jonathon Wickham not only shatters the lives of his five daughters, but inspires Adelynn, his eldest, to make an investigation into his death. Refusing to accept the official ruling of homicide for her father's case, Adelynn decides to find the real murderer at all costs. Her motivation to research family ancestry follows, allowing Adelynn to recognise how each of her subjects became historically impacted by fate and circumstance. Adelynn is finally drawn to philanthropy and service in Fremantle, Australia, before trading the world of charity for a romantic interlude in Paris, France.

The author has worked as a primary teacher for most of her career, which began in the early 1970s in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. She later moved to the outback settlements of the Northern Territory, settling eventually in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. During that time, Jennie focused on her teaching, academic writing, children's literature, and, more recently, historical narrative. Jennie is enthusiastic about teaching, her inspiration to write develops as she works with young children. She credits this experience as having shaped her interest in social history and the lived experience of the past. Her interest in memoir, history and philosophy becomes evident in her writing as her words contain stories about challenges and adversity.
