Born in abject poverty in the east end of London, Vanessa meets a German refugee in her first year at school. He encourages her love of mathematics, and they teach each other their languages.

Winning a scholarship to a grammar school a distance away, she goes to live with her foster parents who encourage her talents.

Leaving school, she uses her mathematical skills and her fluency in German to help with the war effort. At wars end she meets a pilot and after a weekend away she finds herself pregnant.

Her family died in the Blitz, and alone and despondent after her pilot dies, she walks into a hospital which changes her life.
