Valdemar is the favourite princeling of King Ingvarr. He is charming, polite, and intelligent and, when his father gives him permission to travel across the sea for a celebration, he cannot wait for the journey. However, there is more to this journey than he knows. The Great Unseen is a not-so-distant threat looming over the Kingdom of Knirstval. Valdemar's father, Duke Gumarich, has kept these old legends a secret to protect his son, but now, action needs to be taken and a disguised princeling is the best chance of success.
At least Valdemar will not be alone on his mission. The Great Unseen may have its minions, but our hero also has his allies in the form of his young friends and a great wizard.
How will young Valdemar fare against the threat? Will he evade the watchful rose? Will he succumb to the sinister power of the staircase? And then there are the stone animals... that are not always statues... and what is so special about the owls?
