In a world that seems to be falling apart, how can we shape not only our own lives, but the lives of our community to create a world that more closely resembles God‘s dream for us? This book attempts to offer a way forward. Using the ageless wisdom of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, it applies those steps not only to our personal lives, but to the lives of our broader community. Imagine living in a world where we recognize that we are not the center of the universe. That we are not in control of other people, places or things. Imagine a world in which collectively we can fearlessly examine our past and call out what went horribly wrong and celebrate what was wonderfully right. Imagine a world in which the wisdom gained through surrender and self searching is then shared with the whole wide world! Imagine such a world! This small book is an effort to move us all in that direction.

The author, known as Fr. David, is an Episcopal priest who served as Rector of a Hawaii inner city church that found itself transformed by taking Jesus and the gospels seriously and oftentimes literally. He learned much about his faith while serving as a residential drug and alcohol counselor for five years, where the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, a spiritual guide second to none, served as the basis for recovery for those in treatment. Following that, he entered law school and was a trial lawyer for twenty-two years, representing many clients who had been molested by clergy and experiencing through them the horrors that can occur when clergy exchange following Jesus for the rules and rituals of religion. In 2007, he was ordained an Episcopal priest and embarked on a ministry that tried to say "yes" to just about every ministry opportunity that presented itself, no matter how strange, challenging, or outlandish. In that "yes," Jesus kept showing up in the faces of the most unlikely people.
