The author, known as Fr. David, is an Episcopal priest who served as Rector of a Hawaii inner city church that found itself transformed by taking Jesus and the gospels seriously and oftentimes literally. He learned much about his faith while serving as a residential drug and alcohol counselor for five years, where the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, a spiritual guide second to none, served as the basis for recovery for those in treatment. Following that, he entered law school and was a trial lawyer for twenty-two years, representing many clients who had been molested by clergy and experiencing through them the horrors that can occur when clergy exchange following Jesus for the rules and rituals of religion. In 2007, he was ordained an Episcopal priest and embarked on a ministry that tried to say "yes" to just about every ministry opportunity that presented itself, no matter how strange, challenging, or outlandish. In that "yes," Jesus kept showing up in the faces of the most unlikely people.
