Paul King is a single-parent father to a son and ex-singleparent foster carer to forty-four children during an eight year spell. He grew up in Hastings, East Sussex, and is one
of three children to an Irish mother and English father. He was educated in Hastings and at age fifty-two enrolled in a degree at Westminster University as a mature student. At the same time, his son also began his degree in London, though at a different university. They both achieved a first with honours in the same year where James went on, perhaps unsurprisingly, to become a teacher and specialist in educational and developmental psychology.
