On a warm summer’s night in 1965, a baby girl was left alone in a wicker basket, wrapped in a hand-knitted blanket, dressed beautifully, with nothing but a mysterious Victorian brooch beside her. That baby was Elizabeth Richmond. Relinquished is her deeply personal account of growing up in Britain’s foster care system, where love and pain were inseparably bound. Raised by foster parents carrying their own unhealed wounds, Elizabeth struggled to understand what family and belonging truly meant. With candor and courage, she shares the story of the little girl who always felt “unadoptable,” and the woman she became: resilient, determined, and carving out a life in nursing while carrying the unanswered questions of her beginnings. This memoir is not only about being relinquished but also about survival, forgiveness, and the lifelong search for identity. At its heart, it is a story of how one woman turned loss into strength and silence into truth.

Liz was brought up in long term foster care and moved out of the social services care system to navigate and work her own way without parental support through college. She then entered nurse training. Over her thirty-five year nursing career, she supported herself through university, achieving a PhD and worked in both the UK and the USA. She has published over one hundred and thirty professional and academic papers and two multi-professional patient discharge textbooks, which enabled her to travel globally delivering lectures and presentations. In 2023, she became a Professor for Nursing Practice, a role where she feels ‘utterly privileged.’ She lives with her husband in Herefordshire, where, when she is not working, she enjoys home dressmaking, writing, home baking, and gardening. This book is her first attempt at non-academic writing. She says she has so much to do. Life is just too short.
