Nicholas Chilvers was born into a working-class family and left school without any formal qualifications. Work started at the local Co-op. He took evening classes to improve his education and advance his prospects. Over time, he became an area manager for a number of non-food stores. By working in retail, he gained considerable experience of meeting the public, which required a range of personal skills depending on the circumstances. At home, he lived modestly, enjoying family life while following public affairs. How and why he put himself forward as a JP is explained in On the Bench.
