In Journeys into Mental Health, Carol Komaromy offers a deeply moving and insightful exploration of mental health care from the 1960s onward. Based on real-life experiences and fictionalized accounts, this book follows Kate, a young medical student navigating the complex, often unsettling world of the psychiatric hospital. Through Kate's eyes, readers witness the struggles of patients - many institutionalized for life - not always because of illness, but due to societal norms and gendered expectations. Kate throws light on shifting mental health policies, the impact of institutionalization, and the controversial treatments once considered standard practice. From harrowing cases of forgotten patients to the broader political and social forces shaping mental health care, Journeys into Mental Health is a poignant, thought-provoking read that challenges perceptions and invites reflection on how far we've come - and how much further we have to go.
