The small and tranquil village of Appleton Roebuck is just a handful of miles outside of the ancient city of York in north Yorkshire. It's very quiet and the people who live there like it that way.
Just off the Main Street, down a dusty, heavily potholed track, there hides a house, well... a bungalow really and inside, there lives a man, John Ryder... an unremarkable man, someone you would pass in the street without giving a second glance.
When John Ryder and his faithful companion, a small terrier called Jack, move into the secluded bungalow they make a remarkable discovery in the adjoining field. Determined to keep their discovery a secret they set about living a life of self-sufficiency and isolation. All is well until a property development company decides to build houses on the field. Will John be able to defend the field and the amazing secret it holds against the relentless march of progress?
