Here, the author Josephine Duthie introduces us to Carrie, a fragile yet determined young woman on the brink of escape from a childhood marked by fear and cruelty.
With only a battered suitcase and a flicker of hope, she flees the only home she has ever known, stepping into an unfamiliar world where freedom feels as frightening as the life she left behind. But Carrie is not alone. Since childhood, she has been protected by a strange grey mist she calls Poppy, a comforting presence that shields her from pain. Now, as she begins her training as a student nurse and tastes independence for the first time, that same mist begins to change—darkening, strengthening, and revealing a will of its own. As whispers of a forgotten past begin to surface, Carrie is drawn toward a hidden legacy she cannot yet understand.
Caught between fear and awakening, she must come to terms with the truth behind the presence that has always been with her, and decide whether it is her greatest protection… or her greatest threat.

Josephine Duthie

Josephine Duthie was born in 1948 in Lennox Castle. Boarded out from a children’s home in Dunoon at the age of eight to a croft in the Northeast of Scotland, Josephine trained as a nurse in 1966 and spent many years in the profession. She has been married and widowed twice. She is a mother and grandmother. Poetry is her first love, with over one hundred poems included in several anthologies. Josephine’s first book Say Nothing is an autobiography published in 2012, which connects in so many ways with Shadows in the Mist.
