In 1721, the notorious pirate Anne Bonny was sentenced to death, but managed a stay of execution by ‘pleading her belly'. History loses track of her, and her unborn child, there. In No Requiem For A Dead Pirate, Martha Bertrand speculates on what may have become of her and her child after the history books lost interest. The world of Nassau in the eighteenth century is brought to life as Anne Bonny fights to carve out a space for her and her child in a man's world. Can she succeed, or will she die trying?

Born in Vietnam of unknown parents, Martha Bertrand was brought up in a cold and spartan orphanage in the north of France. Having won a scholarship, she completed her secondary education in Paris. Gripped with the irresistible urge to travel, she then moved to Britain to learn English, graduated, trained as a teacher and taught for twenty years before fulfilling her first ambition that was always to be a writer. "With nothing known about my family, I am the head of a new dynasty with my name indelibly carved at the top of my family tree."
