In Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Peter Scherr reflects on a life shaped by music, memory, and unexpected moments. Through vivid scenes from childhood, travel, love, and creative work, these pieces explore the strange beauty and confusion of being human.
Ordinary experiences—a classroom, a train ride, a chance meeting—open into deeper reflections on identity, art, and the fragile balance of the mind. Honest, thoughtful, and often quietly humorous, the writing captures how small moments can leave lasting marks.
This collection offers an intimate look at one life’s journey, and the memories that continue to shape it.

Peter was born in the eastern US state of Connecticut in 1963 and experienced the pleasures and pains of childhood there. He spent most of his adult years in Hong Kong. Immersion in the local culture, language, family, and friends—all in the context of the magical topography and climate of the territory—marked him for life. While living there, he played in the Philharmonic, made his own music, and continued to explore the writing that he loved as a young student. His return to the USA in 2014 made for a new beginning, a gradual lessening of his concentration on music, and greater emphasis on balancing family responsibilities with daily labors. In recent years, he has deepened his involvement with writing, which has continued to be a source of joy and meaning.
