Dr Alethea Greene, a newly appointed Senior Coroner, is still reeling from personal tragedy when an anonymous note arrives, bearing three names. Her predecessor, Sir Hugo Manners, had closed these cases as 'unascertained' deaths, but Alethea's instincts, sharpened by her own grief and a returning obsessive-compulsive disorder, tell her there's more to uncover.
When a new case mirrors the pattern—a lonely, elderly man found dead weeks after his passing—Alethea finds herself drawn into a chilling investigation. With the help of her loyal but unconventional senior officer, Lianne, Alethea uncovers a disturbing link between seemingly isolated deaths across South London. As she delves deeper, she unearths a web of deception and a cunning individual who preys on the vulnerable. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she invites.
In a world where appearances deceive, and trust is a luxury, Alethea must navigate a treacherous path to expose a hidden predator, even if it means risking her own fragile peace.
