Author John Thompson has had a long and very eventful military career stretching back to the 1960s. In his book, And the Regiment Blind with Dust and Smoke, he recalls army life in a series of anecdotes, some his own and others contributed by the many friends and colleagues he has served with or encountered over the years, including comedian Jim Davidson OBE.

From tales of hilarious training ground mishaps and boozy nights in Aldershot to poignant memories of the British army’s final days in Aden in 1967, travelling the world as a soldier and later as a security consultant, Thompson has a fascinating insight into army life. John Thompson

John Thompson was born in Lancashire in 1942. He served in 16 Parachute Brigade and 22 SAS Regiment. Since his retirement he has walked up to Everest Base Camp, ran several marathons and ultra-marathons, has become a Black Belt martial arts exponent and now lives with his wife in Anglesey, North Wales.
