Shivaji was born in the latter years of the 1940s, just after India gained her independence from the British Empire. He was named after a great Maharashtrian nobleman and grew up in the central part of the Deccan plateau in the state of Maharashtra, India. Born into a farming community, he was fortunate enough to be given a good education and become a doctor, the first in his family's history. In 1973 he came to the UK to train as a surgeon and while training, met his wife, Heather, and settled as a general practitioner in Lancashire, England. After forty years' service in the NHS, he retired and was soon joined by his wife. They have two grown-up children and grandchildren. He can now be found wandering the lanes around the Ribble Valley or working towards getting his political voice heard.
