Hofer was born in the 1950s when Hong Kong was under British colonization. When he was a teenager, his mother took him across thousands of miles to Britain, where he endured a great deal of sufferings. Later, he ventured to Canada for further education. He was pressured to return to Hong Kong due to his critical role as the eldest son and his heavy responsibility to take care of his mother. His mother's stories had continued in Hong Kong, USA and China until she passed away. His life together with his mother was extraordinary and full of adventures.
