Growing up in Sheffield, Barbara studied English at St Hugh's College, Oxford, then worked for Oxfam before training as a teacher. She became an advisory teacher and writer on international development, then bought a small farm in West Wales, where she co-founded the Shared Earth Trust for wildlife conservation. Later, she became a counsellor in the NHS and worked in leadership training. In 1999, she visited Tanzania, returning many times to live and work in a rural community, collecting stories and helping women establish micro-businesses. Barbara now lives in the south of France, writing and relishing what life brings.
