Having retired to the wild beauty of North Northumberland, he has turned his hand to writing, and this is his first novel. He describes it as "modern romance." Although, it draws on elements of his heroes, like Jane Austen and John Fowles, he intends his characters to speak and act in ways more relatable to modern readers.
