Since the death of his mother when he was just a little boy, Kenny Gillespie has always been burdened by his guilt.

Now a man in his late forties, Kenny is on the cusp of leaving behind him an unfulfilling career as a librarian and the life he has forged for himself in rural Scotland.

A reformed gambler, property has made Kenny a very wealthy man and his plan is to start afresh in a small village in the west of France, but while he can be certain that the future is financially secure, whether or not it will be happy is another matter entirely.

As the days tick down to his departure, Kenny finds himself reflecting on the highs and lows of a life peppered with tragedy and plagued by loneliness, but little does he know that the past is about to catch up with him and cast doubt upon his plans for the future.
