Ulster in the 1990s was a tough place to serve in the British Army. In this unflinchingly tough memoir, James Boyle McEwan recounts his experiences, from his childhood in Edinburgh, through his time in the Army in Ulster and beyond, and up to finding his place outside the forces to discover another purpose, that of fatherhood, only for that to be taken away from him by the selfish actions of his ex-partner. This led to depression, alcoholism, and a stagger through a few years, ending up in Prison and an attempted suicide.
It's never easy being a young man in a tough place, and McEwan pulls no punches in reflecting that. In this remarkable insight into a world often ignored, he does not shy away from explaining problems with his temper, the dangers of alcohol, the distraction of libido, and the sheer heartbreak of having his baby daughter taken from him.
