This book brings to life a fascinating story of a desert land called Dira whose people live in roving oases. Nali and her family are traders owning big, beautiful, long distance yachts in which they travel their world. The Sandnomad people are skilled in tending their underground gardens, weaving and hunting to meet their needs, and it has been this way for many generations.
All is not well though. The Sandnomads rely on a failing technology that they do not understand and cannot repair or remake.
Their legends tell them that there are Others, maybe in the Beyond Beyond who made their technology originally and could help. Nali's father has been gone so long on a mission to find them that Nali hardly remembers him. Her mother has also gone on a journey to the end of everything known to try and find him and has disappeared. In response to a garbled message, Nali sets out with a group of friends to look for them both.
They are opposed by an evil entity in the shape of an old woman called Rediron who has special powers and who with her pet python tries to stop them at every turn. With each setback Nali grows stronger and discovers that she too has powers greater than any ever known. Who is the person who insists on joining them at the last minute? What happens to the little group and the huge bird of prey that joins them? Does Nali's mission succeed?
