Jane Tracey

As soon as I started primary school I was vaguely aware that I was not able to merge into my group of peers, whose strange games were alien to me. Or maybe I was the outsider beamed down to earth to view an intriguing race with their bizarre rituals? Either way, the group quickly turned on me, whilst the teachers left me at the back of the class. My only solace was in the books my mother forced me to read.

About Book

The ill omens in Jane's life start before she is born, when her father shoots a dog in front of her pregnant mother. ‘Didn't you know I was heartless?' he asks, surprised. Even his mother begs Kirsty to leave him, to no avail. Instead, she marries him.

Jane develops various mental and physical problems as she grows up. Living with her family in a small community in a deprived area of Wales, Asperger's syndrome goes unrecognised and undiagnosed, making Jane ‘different' from the other children. She learns, however, to cope with daily life in her own way, despite school bullying and her own disabilities.

In adolescence, depression arrives and bullying continues, but Jane continues to survive a difficult life with her indifferent mother and Peeping Tom stepfather, as well as predatory men and unpleasant colleagues.

The life of a disabled, misunderstood young woman is uncomfortably chronicled here, giving much food for thought.
