Professionally a soil scientist, Dr. Singh spent his post-retirement years researching on European colonialism. He concentrated on machinations behind acquisition of colonies and travails of destitute natives of colonies which deserved more space in books on colonialism.
Dr. Singh earned his Ph.D. from University of California, Davis. He held research and teaching positions at the Punjab Agricultural University before moving out to join administration positions in the government of India as director of two research institutes. Besides authorship of scores of research papers, he co-authored a book "Plant Resources of Andaman and Nicobar Islands" and authored another book "Irrigation and Soil Salinity in the Indian Subcontinent Past and Present", published by the Lehigh University Press.
