During trips back and forth to France looking for a holiday home for idyllic summer getaways, Tony Malcolm ended up being the proud owner of a substantial 13th century château.
Far from being the romantic fairy tale envisaged by Brits looking through Rosé tinted glasses, it has challenged Tony and his family in ways they could never have imagined. Especially with Brexit and COVID 19 throwing spanners into the rusting medieval works. There's joy, there's tragedy, there's a Channel 4 crew pointing cameras in their faces.
This may be far from the comfort zone of a copywriter in the ad industry, but along with his eccentric family, he renovates his way to running a successful chambre d'hôte, even though barely capable of running a bath.
These are the musings of a shambolic and shattered château owner, looking to live la joie de vivre in France with new-found friends, trusted tradespeople, and hilarious anecdotes about French rural life.
This book takes you on the journey of a man determined to salvage a crumbling, semi-derelict wreck, but managing to turn himself into one in the process.

Tony was born in Isleworth, west London and attended institutions of learning in that area, gaining a reputation for being a trouble-maker, upstart, delinquent and least likely to succeed amongst his three siblings. He surprised everyone, including himself, by forging a successful career in advertising as a copywriter, starting out at Saatchi and Saatchi in the early eighties. He wrote many famous adverts for blue chip companies, gaining him a leadership position as a creative director and agency founder. Tony has received multiple global awards for his creative writing. He lives in Richmond, Surrey and north Dordogne.
