Mayde Dimitorva was born in Bulgaria in 1950. She completed high school in her hometown of Gorna Oriahovitsa, and went on to graduate from the University of Economics, Varna, with a Masters in Accounting.

She started her literary career much later, when she founded a private English learning centre for children – During this period she published a story book titled Christmas Hopes.

Carried Away is her first novel. She wrote it with great excitement and love. She hopes that the esteemed reader senses the deeply instilled feelings in each of us, which we try to tame but do not always succeed, yet it keeps us going forward, instead of the obvious diversions.

About Book

Set in Bulgaria, a country in the thrall of a stoic and unyielding communist regime, Carried Away charts the latent sexual maturation of Marieta, a girl growing up within the confines of a dogmatic, prohibitive society. Within this context, Marieta charts her way through a tumultuous marriage, fraught with the ever-present and ambiguous vagaries of the lure of sexual freedom.

Marieta’s innate desire for self-confirmation and moral certitude germinates under the radar of the Communist Party, the ideology of which forbids the sexual independence of women; indeed, it makes them the automations of their husbands. Marieta, in a subversive play to assert control over her mind and body, flouts this societal structure through a series of illicit liaisons, but does she find the release she seeks? Will her abusive marriage come to define her? Or will she find the strength to reconsider her life’s priorities?
