In the time of Homo sapiens, the genus of the human species, a family travels through a harsh and unforgiving landscape. Stormy, the leader, must guide his family, with the help of his brother, Bear, as they navigate an arid savanna in search of a permanent place to settle. Along the way, each family member encounters dilemmas and makes new discoveries which shape not only their way of survival but also their identities as humans.
During their migration, the family meets other tribes of humans, some friendly, some hostile, and must negotiate a way to live in harmony with them. They learn to craft weapons and tools for hunting, and they also begin to develop a culture, intrinsic to humans today, through the creation of costumes, jewellery and communal entertainment. This story is a vivid imagining of how migratory life may have played out for our ancestors, the first humans.
