Mark Hedley's book The Salt of the Earth is a fascinating book that discusses the importance of being a Christian and how Christianity can enrich our lives. The book is a reflection with the benefit of hindsight and experience of what being a Christian on the front line might be about - words he himself uses in this book. He doesn't mean for the book to be a memoir, but he does relate many of his experiences to convey his messages about Christianity.
Mark has devoted his adult years to being a Christian. He has worked as a Barrister and Judge in the Family Division of the High Court. He discusses the difficulties of trying to come to the right decisions whilst heeding the laws of the land and offsetting that against his Christian beliefs.
He spent many years living in a deprived area of Everton in Liverpool where he also served as a lay preacher. He talks of specialising in areas of law that most concern people at the bottom of the social ladder: housing, childcare, domestic violence, crime, compensation.
He served at a free legal advice centre in Liverpool that he describes as ‘God's calling'. Further to this he ran a Bible study group in his house for both Catholics and Protestants, which eventually the clergy were able to attend.
He talks of the privilege he feels for the opportunities he has had and expresses gratitude for the trust that God has put in him.

Mark Hedley

I have lived as an adult Christian for over fifty years, working as a barrister, as a local judge in Liverpool, before becoming a judge in the Family Division. For forty-six years of that time, I lived with my family in one of the more deprived areas of a northern city, trying to fulfil a vocation as lawyer, family man, lay preacher and whatever else has come my way. This is a reflection with the benefit of hindsight and experience of what being a Christian on the front line might be about.
