James Gabriel is one of the partners at Jacobs, Forensic Scientists and Engineers. He is called by the insurers to investigate the cause of a fire at Dagenham Glass. Harry Markham, a loss assessor, is also at the scene on behalf of Dagenham Glass. During the course of the investigation, it seems likely that fraud has been committed by the insured, but James Gabriel needs to find the evidence to prove it. Furthermore, while investigating the next few cases, it seems to James that Harry Markham's luck is just too good to be true. How does he manage to reach the scenes of fires so quickly? Does he have someone on the inside of the fire brigade giving him tips as soon as the fire brigade receives the call? James Gabriel is determined to get to the bottom of this but meets some dangerous adversaries.
