Today, March 22nd marks World Water Day. Not only is this a day to be thankful to have easy access to running, safe water, but also to remember that many others do not. If everyone took action, this problem could be solved within a year. So, here' some water facts, that may impress, amaze and also make you think about giving a helping hand.
Water covers 70.9 percent of the planet’s surface.
97% of the water in the world is salt water. So, the rivers, lakes, streams etc. Only account for 0.3 % of the world’s fresh water. All of the remaining water is mainly underground of trapped in ice and glaciers.
Roughly 70 percent of an adult’s body is made up of water.
The recommend daily amount of water is around 8 cups a day. But, people do tend to forget that not all of this needs to be physically drank. Almost all sources of water have some water content.
Tea and coffee may be mostly water, but be careful. Caffeine is also a milk diuretic (stops water from going to the right locations in the body.)
A person can live for about a month without food, but around a week without water.
Water expands by 9% when it freezes.
2.5 billion People do not have use of an improved sanitation facility.
Some 1.8 billion people worldwide drink water that is contaminated with faeces.
1 in 10 people do not have access to clean, safe water.
