Bala Naidoo was born in a large family of Indian heritage on the
island of Mauritius. After completing his elementary and
secondary education on the island, he went to the University of
Liverpool where he obtained a B.Sc. (Hons.) and a Ph.D. in
Organic Chemistry. He met and married Pauline McManus, a
graduate of Manchester University, before moving to Purdue
University in the U.S.A to do postdoctoral research in Medicinal
Chemistry. On his return to England, he taught Biochemistry in
London at Tottenham Technical College. As both he and his wife
felt rather constrained by life in London, they decided to emigrate
to Montreal, Canada where Bala spent the next thirty-three years
working in the Chemistry Departments of McGill University,
Dawson College, John Abbott College as well as the Food
Science Department of McGill University. He now resides in
Ladysmith on beautiful Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
